José Lázaro Galdiano was a Spanish intellectual and collector who in his lifetime amassed over 20,000 book volumes as well as numerous other artefacts.
The museum and surrounding gardens that first opened to the public in 1951 display some of these pieces organised over the different floors of the residence that was occupied by José Lázaro Galdiano during his lifetime. The layout of the park which includes 5,000 sq.m. of landscaped gardens follows both the naturalistic English tradition and the more formal French style that was popular in the early years of the 20th Century when the gardens were established.
